WWII PFC James Henry Carter, Sumner County, TN- Artifact Return Search

In 1948, PFC James Henry Carter lost his life in battle while in the Philippines. He would not return home to Tennessee for three years.

James was 20 years old living in Westmoreland, Sumner, Tennessee and working as a farm hand when he registered for the draft on June 30, 1942. He enlisted in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 20 Nov 1942.

His Aunt sent a V-MAIL on January 7, 1945 writing that she was worried about him because his mother had not heard from him since he was wounded. The last time he communicated with his family was on 29 Nov 1945 and his aunt was hopeful that he was returning home.

James Aunt was right to worry. Records show that James was KIA just six days later on 13 Jan 1945 in the early days of the Battle of Luzon, Philippines. A news article dated 22 Aug 1948 lists him as one of the West Tennessee soldiers returning home. He was interred at Nashville National Cemetery on 2 Sep 1948.
