Antique marriage certificates are somewhat of a fascination for me. They represent a monumental (and hopefully happy) time in two people's lives. Long ago, they used to be beautifully made and were meant to be framed. I admit that I wish they were still as lovely.

While on the 127 Yard Sale last year, I discovered the marriage certification of Maud A Hyatt and Maurice W Baker. It's dated 4 Apr 1901 (Happy 123rd Anniversary you two!). The frame appears to be original and it's in amazing condition. As I looked closer, it contains a lock of hair. I'm not sure if I find that creepy or sweet but it's definitely there. Unusual for sure!

Frederick is the county that Monrovia is located in, so they were married close to home. My research shows Maurice born on 16 Nov 1876 and Maude on 20 Aug 1876. Maurice was a farmer and a Freemason. Records show the Baker family had been in the area since at least 1777. Maurice and Maud had two children and lived their entire lives in Frederick, Maryland. They are buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery next to each other.

I was not able to locate a direct descendent but found family through a distant connection and returned the artifact to her (without the lock of hair!). I'm hopeful this artifact is preserved for many generations to come.
